Who We Are Partners in Ministry is a non-profit group that was founded to support the Protestant campus ministry at Swarthmore College. Partners is a consortium of local churches, the Friends Meeting, alumni and friends who work together to ensure the presence of a vital ecumenical ministry in the liberal Protestant tradition. Partners supports a full-time campus minister and a variety of programs including weekly Scripture study, worship, faith-based community service, retreats, and student participation in local congregations. While this ministry is given practical support from the college in the form of office space, its financial support is derived solely from contributions from churches, alumni and friends. It's easy to make a donation right from this site using our donation page.
Campus Minister The current campus minister is The Rev. Joyce U. Tompkins. An Episcopal priest, she holds a B.A. in Classics from Cornell and and an M.Div. from The General Theological Seminary in New York. Her experience includes twenty years of parish work throughout the country and abroad, as well as student counseling at Marquette University and with Au Pair in America.
History and Vision Partners in Ministry was founded in 1982 at the request of students who found that, in the demanding and secular intellectual environment of Swarthmore's campus, spiritual needs were not being met. The campus ministry strives to create a spiritual balance between the pervasive humanism of the academic climate and the narrow fundamentalism of evangelical campus groups. Students need to be encouraged to develop a sense of selfhood in God that is personally meaningful, intellectually credible, and socially responsible. This was the vision that inspired the founders of Swarthmore College. It is a vision we share and activley promote through our support of the campus ministry.
